In the wake of his failure in the literary world, the main character, Ramon Duarte, decides to become a private investigator. He feels that this line of work will give him the material he needs to face a blank page again some day. The cases that he must solve are particularly odd, and very different from those that most detectives work with. He can't get involved in the investigation of crimes; in this country such terrain is strictly confined to the police. Instead, Duarte investigates occurrences from everyday life that are nevertheless full of mystery.
