A media industry businessman in hard times is murdered in his hotel during the dinner reception of a literary awards ceremony which he himself had convened. Twenty-four hours before his death, the man had contracted private detective Pepe Carvalho because he felt under threat and wanted protection. For reasons of security, while the awards ceremony is being prepared the detective receives a long line of rejected lovers, cuckolded husbands, vengeful businessmen and writers with more ambition than talent, who comprise the complicated life of the businessman and the portrait of a patrician society in which anything is tolerated except one's origins... or failure.
