Portraits does not set out to offer a scientific approach to schizophrenia. In fact, it focuses on people rather than on the disease. It is a positive contemplation, a gaze that reveals people’s hopes to find a solution and overcome the disease. This documentary follows the stories of eight people (Lluís Gràcia –the professor-, Isabel, Pilar, Jordi, Cati, Carles, Antonia and Jaime) who try to recover normal every-day life after many years of living with the disease.
The painting workshop is the central avenue towards such recovery. Painting as a means of expression and freedom, as a metaphor for reconstruction. The idea is to portray how this workshop experience gradually changes the main characters; to focus on their development, whether positive or negative.
