The population density on the high plateau of western Castile-Leon, falls below the level that international organisations consider to be characteristic of desert areas. The results are virtual ghost towns where the only residents are elderly locals who have never had either the opportunity or the courage to leave.
Two opposing phenomena coexist in this scenario. On the one hand is emigration, represented by those who abandoned their rural homes. And on the other hand are the new residents, who have given up urban life to embrace a new lifestyle in a more authentic, stimulating environment.
